Knife Crime Awareness and the Law

Dear Resident,

Knife crime continues to have a devastating impact on individuals, families and communities. We are asking everyone to play their part in helping keep our neighbourhoods safe.

Did you know? • It is illegal to carry a knife in public without a valid reason. 
• Carrying a knife for "protection" or "just in case" is not considered a lawful excuse. 
• The maximum penalty for illegally carrying a knife can be up to 4 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both. 
• It is illegal to sell most knives to anyone under 18 years old. 
• Using any knife in a threatening manner is a serious criminal offence, regardless of whether the knife itself is legal to own. 

Young people are particularly encouraged to think carefully about the consequences of carrying a knife. Carrying a weapon increases the risk of serious injury and can lead to a criminal record that may affect future education, employment and travel opportunities.
